VILA REAL
This city is the ideal starting point for exploring the Douro valley and follow the famous Port Wine Route. This comes in the vineyard in the south of the city, grown in terraces on the steep banks of the river. The beginning of autumn is the best time to visit this place, since many owners of the farms welcome visitors and can observe the workers picking the grapes, often singing while working. For centuries, agriculture has been an important means of livelihood in this region.
